New Year, New Semester, New You!

We are back on campus and classes are chugging along. It can be simultaneously exciting and nerve-racking, but either way, I know that you can make it through. Spring semester is nice because we start with the dark and depressing weather and slowly work our way to beautiful Iowa spring weather. So stay positive! We’ve got great things ahead of us!

If you are a first-year student, you probably spent last semester figuring out how to do the whole college thing, but now you’ve at least got an idea of what to expect. So what comes next? Truly finding your place on campus! It takes longer for some people to find their community at Iowa than others so if you are someone who still isn’t quite sure about what UIowa has to offer you and what you have to offer UIowa, that is totally okay. This semester is your opportunity to get involved and make new friends! A great place to start is AP and Olivia’s awesome article about getting involved in the second semester.

For some people it will be more about refining the routine developed in the fall. That could be anything from exercising more often to highlighting lines in a textbook to better understand readings. It could also mean going to a different study space to stay more focused. For me, it was about writing things. Refining my routine meant writing the tasks I needed to accomplish in a physical notebook rather than just on a post it note left on my desk. I realized that I needed to have my schedule with me at all times in order to be efficient and organized.

So here is my challenge for you: Turn the fresh semester into something that works for you. Take advantage of this opportunity to fearlessly try new things. And as always, do not hesitate to contact our staff if you are ever struggling. We are always happy to help!

Have a wonderful semester.
