Hey Hawkeyes! Olivia here. Lately I have been getting ~inspired~ by all of the mug recipes I have seen on Pinterest and other sites. It got me thinking about which of them I would have made when I was a living in the Res Halls! Sierra, Grace, Kelin, and I set out to make three meals in the microwave: breakfast, lunch, and dessert. Here’s how it went:
Omelette in a Mug
- 2 eggs
- 1/8 cup chopped ham
- 1/8 cup chopped pepper (leftover from eating peppers and hummus YUM)
- cooking spray (optional but makes for easy cleanup)
- 2 tbsp milk (we used Almond bc boujee)
- whatever cheese you have
- S & P packets stolen from Pat’s diner 🙂
You basically just put all ingredients into the mug and then microwave for 1-2 minutes.
These honestly tasted like any other scrambled eggs and were super easy to make. HOWEVER… I don’t think that any of these items would be things just laying around your dorm room. BUT… If you know you would eat a few of these over a couple weeks, I think the $3-5 you would spend for the supplies to make like 6 mugs would be totally worth it! Three Stars.
Two-Cheese Microwave Mac & Cheese
- 1/2 cup of dry pasta (whatever type)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/8 cup pepperjack
- 1/8 cup sharp cheddar
So to make this you take the salt, pasta, and water and microwave it for 6-8 minutes (check every two minutes to see if it’s soft yet). Then, add the milk, cheeses, and pepper and stir it up.
So if you are thinking about making this, just go ahead and don’t. In the words of Grace “It tastes like cheese on macaroni but not macaroni and cheese”. It is super difficult to get the noodles to just the right consistency without eating all of them before they are cooked. The mug was not fun to clean out after because the cheese was so caked on. Do yourself a favor and just buy the disposable Easy Mac cups if this is your thing. I am literally only giving this a star because I love cheese and carbs.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST…
Duncan Hines Chocolate Lover’s Cake
- 1 package of Duncan Hines Chocolate Lover’s Mug Cake mix
- 3 tbsp water/milk/coffee
- whatever toppings (we used peanut butter and extra Halloween candy!)
I definitely realize this is cheating… but I am writing this post to give you all realistic recipe ideas! That being said, I wasn’t about to give you a recipe that required cocoa powder or baking soda. Sorry not sorry.
To make this, follow the directions on the package… which basically says to add whichever liquid you want to the mix and to put in the microwave for one minute. When it comes out, eat just like that or top with caramel/chocolate syrup/peanut butter/chopped Halloween candy/nuts/whatever.
Oh my gosh I can’t even begin to tell you how good these are! And for like $0.30 a serving it is definitely college budget friendly! They sell a ton of different flavors, so you have other options. I also really like that these come in sealed packages, so there is no issue with buying a pack and letting it sit in your dorm for a couple months. 10/10 would buy again. 5 stars.
Overall, I found most of these recipes to be a ton of time and energy for food that wasn’t that healthy and didn’t taste great. I may consider making the scrambled eggs and the mug cake again… but, ultimately, I learned how lucky students living in the Res Halls are to have the Dining Halls! Use that meal plan, try all the foods, and please do not ever make that awful mac & cheese.
