Student Organization of the Week: Best Buddies

Hey Hawkeyes! This week’s feature for Student Org of the Week is the group ‘Best Buddies’.

What is the purpose/mission of your organization?

Best Buddies International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Best Buddies is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Our programs empower the special abilities of people with IDD by helping them form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure successful jobs, live independently, improve public speaking, self-advocacy and communication skills, and feel valued by society.

What days/times does your organization typically meet? Do you have any upcoming/recurring events you would like to be made known?

We have social events for our entire chapter once a month. This Friday, January 26th, from 3:30-5:30pm in the Nebraska room of the IMU, we are having a painting class with another student organization, Art Hawks.

Why did you personally get involved with this organization? What makes you passionate about this organization?

“I got involved with best buddies because I love meeting new people and making new friends.  The best buddies events are always so positive and that is why I have continued to be a part of this organization.” – Jordan Perlinger (Social Media Manager)

“I love being a part of best buddies because it challenges me to jump of out my comfort zone and build lasing frienships.  Best buddies also gives me the opportunity to be there for someone who needs it while also having a lot of fun in the process!”  – Stephanie Thomas (Event Coordinator)

“I love best buddies for so many reasons!  I love being inclusive and spreading awareness and I love being a friend.  I’m passionate about best buddies because of the wonderful perspective it provides and the wonderful, inspiring, and long lasting relationships it has helped me form.” – Amanda Wilson (President)
