Hey Hawkeyes! This week we sat down with Bailey Zaputil, a senior, to learn about an organization that has made her time at Iowa great!
What is the name of your organization? Do you go by any nicknames or abbreviations?
The organization I am in is called the University of Iowa Honors Newsletter. Our staff advisor is Holly Blosser Yoder. I am the Graphic Designer for the newsletter and Claire Jacobson is the Writing Editor. Elizabeth Sheridan and Emily Creery are the assistant editors, and they’ll be taking over for us when we graduate in May. And then we have a staff of about 6-10 people who write stories and take photos. Everyone is so friendly and nice, it’s really fun to work with them.
What is the purpose/mission of your organization?
Our team creates a quarterly newsletter that covers the events, people and trends in the Honors community. We try to spread awareness about the different programs and opportunities in honors, and highlight the people who are very active in the community. The whole point is to help record and sustain the community.
What days/times does your organization typically meet? Do you have any upcoming/recurring events you would like to be made known?
As the graphic designer, I usually meet with the other editors a couple of times in the semester, while the writers meet biweekly. As long as you are in the honors program and want to write, you can join. This coming year is very exciting because honors is celebrating its 60th anniversary, so we’re getting in contact with our broad alumn network and are going to be covering lots of events happening in celebration of the program. Our newsletter will be at the forefront of the anniversary.
Why did you personally get involved with this organization? What makes you passionate about this organization?
Since starting at Iowa, I have always been active in the honors community, either taking honors classes or attending honors events and lectures. I saw the position for graphic designer for the newsletter through the honors weekly bulletin. I love graphic design and I wanted to get more involved in the program. Being involved in the newsletter has made me feel more connected to the community and UI in general. I’ve met so many people, gone to so many events and learned about so many possibilities. It’s inspired and challenged me to take risks and try new things.
What social media does your organization utilize?

Our social media isn’t just for the newsletter, it’s for the entire honors program:

Is there anything else you would like to share?
I have really loved working for the honors program and my college experience would not have been the same if I didn’t get involved. Thank you to everyone whose made my time here so wonderful!
