Hey Hawkeyes! We have an exciting special feature of Student Org of the Week this week: BIEDA. Body Image and Eating Disorder Awareness and Student Outreach will be partnering this week to promote some awesome events that they have coming up next week! We sat down with Olivia Westemeier, the President of BIEDA, to give you the scoop on who BIEDA is, what they stand for, and what cool opportunities they are bringing to campus this spring!
What is the name of your organization? Do you go by any nicknames or abbreviations?
Body Image and Eating Disorder Awareness aka BIEDA
What is the mission of your organization?
Our mission statement is: “To encourage a positive, sustainable lifestyle through body image and eating disorder awareness and campus/local resource identification.”
What days/times does your organization typically meet?
“General Member Meetings” are for every member of BIEDA to meet other members and enjoy our activities we host. These (this semester) are on the first Tuesday of every month from 5:30-6:30 Rooms TBA.
Why did you personally get involved with this organization? What makes you passionate about this organization?
As a child, I constantly played sports and through all the activity, I ate a lot and gained a lot of muscle. My mother viewed this as me being overweight and unhealthy and began to shame me for eating causing me to have an unhealthy relationship with food and my body. Later on in life, I had watched my mother suffer with bulimia for over five years due to her own negative body image and relationship with food. I joined BIEDA to help people learn how to love themselves, be surrounded by supportive peers, and find treatment that works for them if they are struggling.
What social media does your organization utilize?
Facebook: UI BIEDA
If a student is interested in joining this organization, how should they go about it/who should they contact?
First, they can join our orgsync and follow our socials to see updates on events and activities and can email either firstname.lastname@example.org if you wish to join our email list or Oliviaemail@example.com if you are interested in getting involved more with BIEDA such as joining the executive board (every position is open for election which will be held in April)
