What is the name of your organization? Do you go by any nicknames or abbreviations?
Our name is Reaching OUT in Business, or ROB for short (pronounced like the name).
What is the purpose/mission of your organization?
ROB has been around for two semesters now, and around this time last year we were just an idea. We also want to have strong allies (people who identify as straight support the LGBTQ community), which is very important to our success.
We have three goals:
1) Provide professional development and networking opportunities for our members,
2) Create community within the group where people can be themselves and feel comfortable reaching out to each other, and
3) Change the environment for LGBTQ individual in Tippie to not just be tolerated, but embraced.
More long-term goals included becoming a well-established organization within Tippie like the bigger orgs/professional fraternities. I would love to see ROB become a pipeline from club to internship/job with a great alumni network. Our current alums work at JP Morgan, CNA, and CH Robinson. We already get reached out to by recruiters about doing events or for job/internship opportunities, so to see that continue and grow would be great. I think we are on the right path and the current members are all amazing people who will no doubt take us to new heights.
What days/times does your organization typically meet? Do you have any upcoming/recurring events you would like to be made known?
We meet every Monday at 8pm for this semester.
Our next event is our end-of-year celebration this Sunday April 29th from 12-2. Anyone is invited however we would greatly appreciate if they bring a dessert/side dish to share as it is a potluck.
Some events we have done this semester included:
- Career and Internship Fair Workshop with Michael Kaplan
- LGBTQ Financial Literacy with Northwestern Mutual
- Zach Wahls Discussion (this had 85+ people in attendance and was open to the public)
- Won the New Student Organization from Tippie and are nominated for Most Promising Organization from CSIL
- Professional trip to Des Moines last fall in collaboration with AKPsi (Business professional fraternity)
- Professional trip to Minneapolis this spring in collaboration with Multicultural Business Student Association
- LGBTQ Resource Center Game nights
- Study Abroad presentation collaboration
Why did you personally get involved with this organization? What makes you passionate about this organization?
“I joined this organization because I felt like it was a way for me to make a difference within Tippie and at the University. Many other organizations on campus and especially within Tippie, explained how joining their organization will benefit me and how I will land my dream job and make friends in my classes. However, I was looking for something more in an organization and I wanted something where I could see my impact on campus, gain leadership experiences all while feeling comfortable of who I am. I am passionate about Reaching OUT in Business because I feel as though it will make somebody else’s time at the University and Tippie better, and I won’t even know them personally.
Our initiatives are about gaining professional development and embracing all students. I believe that each student is entitled to every resource on campus and they should feel safe and comfortable using them. ROB is that organization where anybody is welcomed, and we want to hear how we can make Tippie a safe place for everybody. I have been a member of ROB for a year now and it was one of the best decisions of my college years. With only being a new and small organization, I think we have accomplished a lot in our short time and have many more things planned to come.”
“I got involved with ROB to be around like-minded people, embrace my true identity, and grow professionally. I am passionate about creating programming and events that are inclusive for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community.”
“I wanted to join an organization that I felt completely comfortable in, even as a straight-identifying ally. I had also heard a lot of great things about ROB. and knew there would be leadership opportunities and the ability to really make change and have an impact.”
